Extending participation after participation period has ended

Description: Hi Avicenna community. I have a question about extending the participation period. We initially set up our study to have a participation period of 18 weeks from the date of enrollment. Participants received surveys twice a week and the triggering logics were adapted to these 18 weeks (i.e., each would end after 18 occurrences). Now we have some participants whose 18 weeks period has ended but we want to keep enrolled for longer.

I have done the following: 1) in the study settings, changed the participation period to 175 days (= 25 weeks). 2) Changed the triggering logics to 25 instead of 18 occurrences. 3) Modified the participation end dates of these individual participants to 25 weeks after they enrolled. 4) Reloaded their devices.

However, surveys are not being sent out to them. When they open the app they see the “Empty Message when no Session” message even when there should be a survey they should be able to complete.

Is it even possible to extend a participation period after it has already ended? If so, how can we do it?

Hi Laurien,

Thanks for reaching out.

You can check the modified sessions based on the new triggering logic under Activity Sessions on your dashboard for the relevant participants and activities. If you cannot see them and the sessions have not been created, this is most likely due to the order in which the changes were applied.

This should be the order:

First change the study Participation Period.
Then modify the participation period from the Participation tab for the mentioned participants and modify the triggering logic.
Ask participants to sync data and reload studies from the app.
Once these steps are done, you can check the Activity Sessions page to see whether the modified sessions appear as expected.

Hi Somayeh, thank you for your help! I went back and applied the changes in the order you provided, and now I can see the future activity sessions for these participants whereas before I couldn’t. I’m glad it was such an easy fix

Best, Laurien
