Supported on Android.

This data source monitors participant web browsing activity using a specialized Firefox Nightly Mobile plugin.

Use Cases

  • Mental health research: Examining associations between web usage patterns (e.g., time spent on certain websites) and mood, stress, or anxiety outcomes.
  • Health behavior studies: Investigating how online activity relates to physical activity, sleep, or other health-related behaviors.
  • Digital health literacy: Analyzing participants’ visits to health-related websites to understand information-seeking behaviors.
  • Intervention research: Evaluating changes in web activity patterns before and after digital interventions.

Data Structure

Besides the common data fields, each record contains:

  • URL: Full URL of the visited webpage. Internally stored as url.
  • Content: HTML content of the page, converted to Markdown. Internally stored as content.

Data Collection Behavior

A record for the visited page is uploaded to Avicenna servers when the page loads.

Setting Up Web Activity as a Data Source

Ensure the following for using this data source:

  1. You contact us for activation, due to privacy and compliance concerns.
  2. Participants provide informed consent and understand the data collection specifics.
  3. Participants use Android devices.
  4. Firefox Nightly Mobile is installed on participant devices.
  5. The Research Web Capture plugin is installed on the Firefox Nightly Mobile app.
  6. Participants have joined the relevant study in Avicenna.
  7. Participants log in via the plugin interface using their Avicenna credentials.
  8. Participants use only the designated device and Firefox Nightly Mobile app for web browsing during the study.

[!note] Important Notes

  • The plugin collects data only after the participant logs in.
  • Participants can exclude data collection from private browsing tabs.
  • Participants can stop data collection at any time by logging out of the plugin.
